Java Runtime Environment

Licensing and Distribution Info

The Java Runtime Environment (also known as the JRE or Java Runtime) consists of the Java Virtual Machine, Java Core Classes, and supporting files. It is the runtime part of the JDK -- no compiler, no debugger, no tools. It is the minimum set of executables, libraries and files that form the Java Platform. This product satisifes the demands of our customers for the smallest runtime they can bundle with applications.

The supported operating systems are listed in the popup menu of the Java Runtime download page. Solaris x86 and Macintosh will be available at a later version.

Java Runtime is free for anyone to download and use. Redistribution of the Java Runtime is also free, subject to terms of the license. This allows developers or vendors who want to bundle it with their applications can do so. However, redistribution of the JDK is not free.

Now that the Java Runtime is available, vendors who have been bundling the JDK in lieu of the Java Runtime have 180 days to replace the JDK with the Java Runtime. Vendors who want to distribute the compile-time portion of the JDK, can contact us for licensing.
